Streamingwith Wave Hello Coach, and thank you for today'slecture! The beginning and ending of the lecture in a clear and respectful way(saying 上课 and 下课) is quiteinteresting to me. It is, I believe, very typically Chinese, and something Ican miss in the Swedish learning context that I am more familiar with. Today we talked about a few things that Iwould like to point out. The first one is the eight directions, where, at leastas a beginner (or perhaps always), you start by facing south. We started south, and, within the sequencethat we did, we faced south, east, and northeast in that order. It will beinteresting to see how the sequence continues. The second one is that you have to know the names of theindividual movements to understand how they are supposed to be performed. So byknowing their names, you will know more about what is going on in that specificmovement. It was very visible in the ’ two palmspressed vertically against the screen window’ where mypalms were not pressed against the screen window at all. I hope by knowingthis, my posture and movements will improve. And by learning the other names, Ihope I can become a better student. One which I see as very clear and helpfulis the ‘streaming with the wave’ which really emphasizes the fluidness, and ‘buoyancy’ of the movement. The ones you talked about, and I receivedare these: 天人合一(tian ren he yi): Oneness of Heaven(nature) and Man 教学相长(jiao xue xiang zhang): Teaching and learning promote each other 混沌开基(hun dun kai ji): the first separated from Chaos 停车问路(ting che wen lu): parking and asking for directions 帖纱垂帘(tie sha chui lian): two palms pressed vertically against the screen window 随波逐流(sui bo zhu liu): streaming with the wave (like a boat) I included them here for my own sake, justto have them on hand together with my ‘today’s notes’.
Youalso talked about the way that you in your ‘school’ or within this ‘form’,teach your students. You do the sequence (or part of the sequence) three timestogether with your students. Then the student, in this case I, should try topractice on (his/her) my own. I think this is a very good practice. Following is “easy”, but remembering (with body and mind) requires a lot of practicingon your own. I believe this way of following-doing-asking-doing-following (orhow ever it plays out) is a great tool for teaching and learning. This is avery professional way, and including the videos, photos and notes gives amazingprerequisites for learning. I hope I can be a good enough student, and I willdo my best with the time I have on my hands. Again, I much enjoy the water quan. It is abeautiful art indeed. I think learning it is an amazing opportunity. Who knew Iwould meet you on just a regular Sunday. Such a lucky coincidence. Thank youfor giving me this opportunity to learn the water quan and also to build myfoundational martial-arts knowledge. I hope this will also help me improve mytaiji significantly. Thanks again.
